Mary and Joe Hamby started Mary’s as a backyard hobby in the mid 1970s. Through referrals of area nurseries, word of mouth, and lots of hard work, the backyard hobby grew into a prosperous greenhouse operation. Today, Mary’s has more than 50 greenhouses with about 3 acres under cover and approximately 15 full-time employees. We are a wholesale and retail operation, with our primary customer base consisting of wholesale customers such as garden centers, landscapers, and other greenhouses.  We are open year round but our hours do change with the seasons.

We grow a wide variety of container annuals and perennials. We offer an assortment of ornamental grasses, hostas, daylilies, vines, hardy ferns, roses, and groundcovers, as well as lots of herbaceous perennials. We also grow several kinds of bedding plants, hanging baskets, herbs, and vegetables. Our goal here at Mary’s is to offer a wide variety of high quality plants at a great value, whether you are a plant fanatic shopping for your own garden or a garden center buying by the truckload.

We are primarily a wholesale business that is also open to retail customers. Shopping at Mary’s is self service. This keeps costs and prices down for our customers. We can answer questions and direct you to specific plants, but we cannot plan your garden or walk around and shop with you. For many customers shopping at Mary’s is a garden adventure in searching, spotting, and choosing varieties to grow from a gigantic collection of plants!

Sadly, our founder and mentor, Mary Hamby died August 4, 2009 of a massive stroke.  She had been retired from the day to day activities of the greenhouse for years, although most people didn’t know it. Everyone assumed she still worked because she could be found on her hands and knees wearing her big floppy hat working in her garden; however, Mary didn’t consider planting, weeding, and mulching her garden as work. She enjoyed gardening and devoted much of her retirement to her gardens.

Today, Mary’s is still a family-owned business. Three of Mary’s four children work in some capacity at the greenhouse as well as two daughter-in-laws, 2 grandsons and granddaughter-in-law. Several other grandchildren have worked and still work from time to time as needed.
